This Easter we need everyone to stay at home to protect the health of the community, but that doesn’t mean Easter is cancelled.
The usual extended-family gatherings, religious congregations and community events can’t happen like they usually do. But that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate and make the most of the four-day long weekend at home.
Three tips to make the most of the four-day Easter long weekend at home in 2020 (and have some fun!)
1. Keep your event traditions alive. Religious service? Google to find one streaming online instead. Family dinner? Schedule a video call - you can still enjoy a meal together, just virtually. Bonus: no one gets stuck doing the dishes for a whole dinner-party of people. Adjusting your traditions to the current context to stay connected while you’re physically distant is great for your mental health and wellbeing.
2. Get egg-stra creative. Try themed activities at home like egg-painting and hat-decorating. If you’re short on eggs you could paint rocks/potatoes/fruit instead. And instead of wearing your decorated hat to an Easter hat parade, wear it to your virtual Sunday dinner. If you’re game, see who can think of the best hand-washing song (maybe the song of a sports team you follow, like in the video below). If you’re feeling ambitious, you could try learning something that takes a lot of practise as this family did.
3. Get into Premier’s Active April: physical activity is a great way to look after your health while you need to stay at home, and as it happens, the Easter long weekend is happening during Premier’s Active April. Why not register with your friends and/or extended family, then plan some fun exercises that each person can do at home. You could use Active April’s online videos (register to access), learn a new dance move, like the one the teenagers in this family taught their parents, or jog on the spot to your favourite song – each friend or family member gets a turn to pick theirs!
4. Enjoy the Easter Bunny ‘eggs-semption’. Good news – the Easter Bunny can still visit! Australia’s Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy confirmed that the Easter Bunny provides an ‘essential service’ and is allowed to deliver eggs on Sunday! So that means kids can still do an egg-hunt in their garden or around their home. You could even coordinate a video call with the grandparents during the hunt so they’re involved, or use the panoramic setting on your phone to take a photo of the eggs at your place, then share them with your niece/nephew/grandkids so they can point to where they see the eggs in the photo.
Long weekends only come around a few times a year, so don’t let staying at home spoil the fun. Try to make the most of the time you have by connecting with friends and family online, or trying some of these other tips if you’re looking for things to do at home.
