Imagine a funky laneway streetscape in central Geelong where flavours and music make you double check your location.
Can you really sense aromas from Afghan, Greek, Italian, Hungarian, Sudanese, Indian, Spanish, Sri Lankan, Karen, and Mauritian food?
You check your location and your senses. Welcome to Diversitat Wholefoods’ 2013 Food of the World Festival.
On December 6 from 6.30 – 9.30pm be transported to another place of sensory experience, with tantalising food, music and cultural glimpses from other lands.
Each year this special laneway festival gains another dimension, and this year is no different, with the welcome inclusion of film. Award-winning community arts organisation Curious Works celebrates through three short films the extraordinary and culturally rich lives of those in our community.
Each Meet+Eat film uses the act of sharing a meal as a way of getting people from different walks of life to sit down and have a yarn. Meet+Eat reminds us that we don’t know the stories behind many of the people we come into contact with. Without knowing the whole story, we form our own assumptions about who they are and what they think. It’s only when we’re invited to share a meal that we are able to get a fuller picture.
Working directly with four families and two community groups, the films visit issues of immigration, displacement, identity, inter-cultural exchange, personal history, undiscovered talent, dance, youth culture, traditional singing, cooking, eating and new friendship.
Food Of the World Festival 2013 outside Wholefoods at 2 Baylie Place Geelong offers food, live music, dance, film and much more. Entry is free, with food options from $5-$25. Bookings are necessary.
