This report presents the findings from a research project, conducted by the Wellness Promotion Unit at Victoria University and funded by VicHealth, which examined group singing and its associated health and wellbeing benefits. Singing in groups is one of the most popular arts activities in Victoria. There is growing evidence that it facilitates the development of social capital which positively impacts on physical and psychological wellbeing at individual, relational and community levels. Benefits for individual mental health that are associated with singing in groups include increased levels of social connectedness, increased sense of belonging, physical and emotional benefits, and reduced personal stress.
