VicHealth will collaborate with two gender equality experts to trial ways in which Victorian sporting organisations and workplaces can boost gender equality.
Professor Iris Bohnet and Dr Jeni Klugman will partner with VicHealth for the next three years as part of its Leading Thinker initiative.
Prof Bohnet is a behavioural economist at Harvard Kennedy School combining insights from economics and psychology to improve decision making, often with a gender focus. She is also the director of the school’s Women and Public Policy Program and the co-chair of its Behavioural Insights group. Dr Klugman is a Women and Public Policy Program Fellow at Harvard University and the former Director of Gender and Development at the World Bank Group. She has also advised the Clinton Foundation’s No Ceilings: The Full Participation Project and with Chatham House’s Putting Gender Equality on the G20 Agenda.
The three-year residency with Prof Bohnet and Dr Klugman follows the conclusion of Dr David Halpern’s residency as VicHealth’s inaugural Leading Thinker in April, which saw the development and implementation of a series of behavioural insights trials to gently nudge the public into creating healthier lifestyles.
VicHealth CEO Jerril Rechter said the organisation’s new Leading Thinkers would draw on their global knowledge of successful behavioural insights and gender equality work and design trials and strategies to address gender inequality in Victoria.
“Our new Leading Thinkers are exceptional women who have a wealth of experience and I’m so proud we will be able to continue our innovative behavioural insights approach - this time with a gender equality focus,” Ms Rechter said.
“For the past 15 years VicHealth has been a national leader in the prevention of violence against women, helping to build world-first policy research and programs to address one of the key drivers of violence - gender inequality.
“Gender equality is a core principal of a fair, respectful, safe and inclusive society. Through our collaboration with Prof Bohnet and Prof Klugman we believe we can help accelerate Victoria’s journey towards gender equality and create a fairer society in which women enjoy the same opportunities of men in all aspects of life.”
