Name That Point started a conversation with young Victorians about how we are drinking. We all know there's a point during drinks where your evening could go either way - where one more drink could set you on the road to drunkenness.

The first phase of the project kicked off in December 2013 with the launch of the 'NameThatPoint' campaign.

The idea behind NameThatPoint was that if we could recognise this point, we might start to make better drinking decisions. But this point needed a name, so the search began to name the point where clear thinking turns into more drinking.

Thousands of suggestions came in and after 15 weeks of searching and over 45,000 people visiting the website, the winner was decided on 31 March 2014. The winning name was ‘The ‘Chill’ Point’ – The point in the night where you have to chill out, reassess and have clarity so you can continue your night in a safe and fun manner.

As part of the Name that Point campaign, visitors to the website also answered questions about Victoria’s drinking culture. The conversation revealed some plain truths about Victorians’ relationship with alcohol. While alcohol was seen as playing an important role in socialising and making new friends, there was also a strong perception that binge drinking is socially acceptable.  Further, a majority of people (84%) felt that we need to change the Australian drinking culture, specifically to encourage drinking in moderation and finding ways to socialise without getting drunk.

VicHealth collected the data from the five months of conversation and have used this to help inform the No Excuse Needed campaign. By listening to what the community says about the way we drink, we can start to build a healthier culture around alcohol together, ensuring there will be greater capacity for change.
